Colin Hynes - Assistant Principal
About Me: I grew up near Boston, Massachusetts. I attended Princeton University, where I majored in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology with a pre-medical focus. I spent my first year post-graduation teaching Biology and English in New Hampshire. I then pursued my interest in medicine through research jobs in San Francisco (cardiology) and Boston (pediatrics and sports medicine).
In my time at Children’s Hospital Boston, I made some important life decisions, namely that I want to be a teacher and not a doctor. I also met my wife, Amy, and decided I would go wherever she would be. While she completed her medical fellowship, I earned a master’s degree from Harvard University and my teaching license in secondary education.
In 2004, Amy’s appointment as a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital Colorado brought us to Denver and me to Englewood High School, where I taught science. In 2007, I joined the Denver School of Science & Technology first as a teacher and then as Dean/Assistant Principal. Wanting to work in a neighborhood middle school, I came to Mrachek in 2013 as Assistant Principal. Amy and I have two children, Owen (10) and Maeve (7).
Job Description: My job is to accelerate learning for every student, every day. I do my job by fostering staff and systems that drive student growth, both in and out of the classroom. My community needs me to do my job.
